The sacred tooth relic was sent to Sri Lanka from India in the 4th century, and since then has held a significant place in the religious as well as political history of the country.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Kingdom of Kandy has a tumultuous past, due to much interference from the European colonizers who arrived in Sri Lanka in the 16th century. It may have been the last Sinhala bastion to fall to the British Crown in 1815, but it remained a significant place for the people of Sri Lanka even during colonization. This was primarily because of its position as the religious city of the country. It was conferred this honour chiefly because of the fact that it was, and still is, home to the Sri Dalada Maligawa \u2013 the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic \u2013 one of the most revered sites of Buddhism in the world.
